Game rules
Griefun is anarchy. Here people break, loot, blow up claims and kill, and that is part of the game. These rules draw the line between anarchy and unfair play.
By joining the Network you accept the rules. Not knowing the rules is no excuse. The rules are the same for everyone: new players and veterans, ranked and unranked, those who have bought from the Store and those who haven't.
Unbans are not for sale. Every Moderation decision comes with a case number, the rule broken and the right to Appeal.
1. General
The rules apply in the Lobby, on every Sub-server and in Griefun's official Discord and Telegram channels.
Examples in the rules are not exhaustive: "including" means the rule is wider than the list. Disputed cases are covered on the "How Fun works" page.
The Rules Assistant answers questions about the rules but can be wrong. The text of the rules applies, not the assistant's answer.
The game rules are part of the Terms of use, which also cover who runs the Network, languages, age and how changes are made.
2. Account
You are responsible for everything done from your account, including when someone else logged in to it. An account may not be given away, sold, rented out or shared.
Nicknames, skins and clan names that insult, contain sexual content, promote hatred or pose as staff are not allowed.
Phishing for other people's passwords and logging in to other people's accounts is not allowed, including by posing as staff, a giveaway or a check.
3. Communication
The rules in this section apply to any text or image on the Network: chat, private messages, signs, books, item names, banners, maps, builds, nicknames and skins.
Banter and revenge are part of anarchy: a one-on-one hunt, a revenge raid, a clan settling a score once. Clear harassment is not allowed: targeting one player again and again — with messages or in the game, alone, as a group or from several accounts.
Insults based on nationality, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation or disability are not allowed, nor are threats or calls for violence in real life.
Stirring up hostility between nations and countries, justifying wars, war crimes and genocide, and using symbols banned by law are not allowed.
Posting other people's personal data without their consent — real name, address, phone number, photos, messages — or threatening to do so is not allowed.
Sexual content is not allowed. Child sexual abuse material is removed and, where the law requires it, reported to law enforcement.
Spam, flooding, all caps, advertising other servers and links to scam or malicious sites are not allowed.
Posing as staff, a moderator or an AI character is not allowed.
Getting around the chat filter with misspellings, symbols, transliteration or by splitting a message is not allowed. Evading the filter breaks the rule the filter protects.
4. Fair play
Cheats and any means that give an advantage over other players are not allowed, including: kill aura, triggerbot, flying, speed hacks, x-ray (and x-ray resource packs), freecam, player radar, autoclickers, macros, bots and automation. What counts is what a client or mod does, not what it is called. Selling, advertising and distributing cheats is not allowed either.
Mods for performance and visuals (Sodium, Iris, OptiFine), shaders and a minimap that does not show players, mobs or caves are allowed. The staff may ban a mod or one of its features if it gives an advantage; the ban applies from the moment it is published.
Attacks on the Network, its site and services are not allowed: DDoS, bot floods, probing for vulnerabilities without the staff's agreement, and threats of such attacks.
Exploiting bugs in the game or the server is not allowed, including "just to test": duplication, bypassing claims, leaving the world. Using a bug that you knew about and did not report is a violation. The first report of an unknown dupe earns a significant reward.
Lag machines and anything that loads the server on purpose are not allowed. The staff may limit or remove a farm or build that overloads the server, regardless of the builder's intent. Rebuilding it after a warning is a violation.
VPNs are allowed. Using one to evade a Moderation decision is not (rule 9.7).
5. Fun
Outside a claim you may break, loot, set traps and kill: none of this breaks the rules. Deception within the game — deals, promises, ambushes — is part of anarchy too. The staff do not step into such disputes and do not return what was lost.
Leaving the game during combat counts as death: your items drop. The game shows how long combat lasts after the last hit.
Other players cannot take items from your ender chest, or your inventory if you left the game outside combat. Anything else, including inside a claim, can be lost under the rules of the game.
6. Trading
Selling or buying Coins, items, accounts or in-game services for real money or anything of value outside Griefun is not allowed — including through third-party sites and for items or currency of other games and servers. Offering such a deal is not allowed either. Both sides receive a measure, and whatever was gained in the deal is removed.
7. Wipes and Seasons
After a wipe you keep your account and nickname, Season titles and Products marked as surviving the wipe.
A wipe does not cancel Moderation decisions: temporary bans run out on their own date, permanent bans stay.
8. AI characters
Some characters (AI-NPCs) and the Rules Assistant are controlled by AI. They have an AI badge in their name and before every message. They are not players, are not counted as online and sell nothing.
AI replies are generated automatically and may be inaccurate. Promises made by an AI character do not bind the staff, except quest rewards that the server itself gives out.
Making an AI character break the rules — for example, insult others — is the same violation as doing it yourself.
Do not tell AI characters passwords or personal data — yours or anyone else's.
9. Moderation
A violation leads to a Moderation decision. Measures: warning, mute, kick, temporary ban, permanent ban, removal of whatever was gained by the violation (items, Coins, Hearts), removal from the Season leaderboards and loss of a Season title. Measures can be combined.
The staff choose the measure based on how serious the violation is, its effect on other players and the account's history. The list of measures is not a ladder. For serious violations — cheats, dupes, real-money trading, threats, attacks on the Network — the measure can be permanent straight away, without a warning.
A violation is a violation regardless of intent. "I didn't know", "I was testing" and "a friend used my account" do not cancel a measure, but they are taken into account when choosing it.
Decisions are based on server logs, chat records, anti-cheat data and player reports, including recordings and screenshots sent in by players. Evidence is kept with the case.
Every Moderation decision states the case number, the rule broken, the facts, the duration, whether the decision was automated and how to appeal.
Automated systems (anti-cheat, chat filter) can only restrict a player temporarily. A permanent ban is always decided by a person after review.
Evading a Moderation decision — from another account, through a VPN, with a new nickname or from someone else's account — is a new violation. Accounts used to evade are blocked, and the original term may be extended.
10. Appeals and reports
You can appeal a Moderation decision within six months of being notified of it: through the form on the site, by e-mail to support@griefun.com or on Discord. Give your nickname, the case number and why the decision is wrong.
An appeal is reviewed by a person, where possible not the one who made the decision. As a rule, we answer within 14 days; if we need more time, we tell you when to expect an answer. The decision may be upheld, reduced or reversed.
Anyone, including people who don't play, can report illegal content on the Network through the form on the site or by e-mail. We confirm receipt, review the report and tell you the outcome.
Appeals and reports do not limit your rights under the law, including the right to go to court or to a public authority.
Knowingly false reports and spam through any channel break the rules.
